BUILD Students at Maya Angelou Public Charter School preparing for Showcase II.

BUILD Metro DC 2009 Showcases

Ahhh, you never forget your first… BUILD Showcase! For the Metro DC team, March 10th and 12th of 2009 will be remembered for our first two student showcases. Student business teams participate in showcases in preparation for the Business Plan Competition that is held towards the end of the school year.

This inaugural year in DC, twelve student business teams from our two Maya Angelou Public Charter School campuses participated in the showcases. As BUILD tradition goes, the first showcase is preceded by a family potluck. In addition to the generous donations from local restaurants Bucca di Beppo and Ben’s Chili Bowl, many family members brought food, ate, learned more about the BUILD program, and cheered in support as many nervous students presented their business ideas in front of judges for the very first time. The evenings were a great learning experience for the teachers, mentors, and students.

April 7th and 9th were our second student showcases. The students did very well with their PowerPoint presentations. Though they didn’t have as much time to prepare between the first and second showcases, the students made clear progress. We are confident the judges will have a difficult time choosing a winner at the BPC!

We cannot wait to see our enterprising youth and their final presentations at the BUILD Metro DC first-ever Business Plan Competition on May 30th!
